Department of Philosophy of Dhaka College is as old as Dhaka College itself. The college was first established as an Intermediate College, hence logic was offered as a very important subject until a few years back almost all students of humanities preferred to take logic in their intermediate level as an elective subject not only because it helps to carry more marks but logic helps to enrich the language also. When Dhaka College upgraded as a full fledged degree college under Dhaka University, Philosophy was one of the subject to be offered to the students. It has been considered as foundation of knowledge, which also teaches proper methodology. Philosophy has been an interesting subject and helps students to solve many academic, ethical, religious, social, cultural and many realistic problem related to human life. Later on after the establishment of National University all the colleges of Bangladesh offering bachelor courses became affiliated with National University. Honors and Masters courses were introduce in many subject. It inspired the then serving teachers of the Philosophy Department of Dhaka College and they tried hard to open Honors and Masters course on Philosophy. National University first gave permission to introduce M.A. preliminary course in 1997 and eventually Honors course was introduce in 1999 with only four teachers. In the first year only 26 students took admission. But it didn’t take much time, the good name and reputation of the department spread and number of students increase rapidly. The teachers can convey the message that it is a core subject, so anyone can get benefit if they are serious to complete their higher studies. The mission of the Department is to develop human resources by exploring the fullest potential with intellectual capability, cross cultural and ethical values. The department has a spirit of making students enthusiastic in lifelong learning through quality education for better life, better nation and knowledge-based society. Philosophy is called the love of wisdom; students should enquire into the meaning and truth hidden in nature and natural objects. The graduates of this Department have a prospect to join various prestigious jobs in Government and Non-Government sectors.
