A Legacy Built Over Time
Tracing our roots and the foundation of excellence.
Modern education in India is deeply linked to British rule and the East India Company. Though initially focused on trade, they established Kolkata Madrasa (1781), Sanskrit College (1791), and Fort William College (1800). The Charter Act of 1813 formally introduced modern education in India. Lord Macaulay’s Minute on Education (1835) advocated for English as the medium of instruction, leading to the Indian Education Act. As a result, Bengal’s first government school, English Seminary, was founded in Dhaka on July 15, 1835. This institution laid the foundation for higher education in the region. Over time, it evolved into Dhaka College, one of Bangladesh’s most prestigious institutions. Today, Dhaka College continues to shape the nation's academic landscape by contributing in research and leadership.

Dhaka Central College, now Dhaka College, was founded in 1841, initially operating from three rooms at English Seminary School. In 1846, construction of its own campus was completed, marking the beginning of formal higher education in East Bengal. The college quickly became a center for academic excellence, producing students who later joined Kolkata Medical College and Kolkata University, established in 1857. Over the years, Dhaka College expanded its academic offerings, adding a dedicated science building in 1875. By the late 19th century, it had evolved into a premier institution, excelling in philosophy, history, literature, law, and science. Its contributions to intellectual growth in Bengal laid the foundation for modern education in the region as one of the most prestigious colleges in the subcontinent.

Dhaka College has a rich legacy of academic excellence and national significance. In 1908, it moved to Curzon Hall and later transferred its resources to Dhaka University in 1921, forming the foundation of the new institution. After relocating multiple times, the college settled on its current 18.57-acre campus in 1955. Over the decades, it has grown into one of Bangladesh’s leading institutions, offering Honors and Master’s programs across 19 departments. Beyond academics, Dhaka College has played a crucial role in the nation’s political and cultural history, producing leaders, scholars, and professionals. Its commitment to quality education, research, and student development continues to inspire future generations. With a proud legacy and a vision for progress, Dhaka College remains a cornerstone of higher education in Bangladesh.
